A Vision for Modern Coastal Living
The homeowners, a family of four with two beloved pets, envisioned a kitchen that would serve as the heart of their home—a place for casual family gatherings and lively entertaining. They desired a space that exuded a laid-back, coastal vibe while incorporating modern amenities and farmhouse charm. To achieve this, we expanded the kitchen’s square footage, allowing for a more spacious layout that includes a walk-in pantry and an expansive island, perfect for hosting guests.
Enhancing Functionality for Entertaining
Central to the kitchen’s design is the impressive 54-inch gas range, a chef’s dream that facilitates the preparation of large meals with ease. Flanking the range are side-by-side refrigerator and freezer columns, seamlessly integrated with cabinetry panels to maintain a cohesive aesthetic. These appliances provide ample storage for fresh ingredients, ensuring the kitchen is always ready for impromptu gatherings.
To further support the family’s entertaining needs, we incorporated under-counter refrigerator drawers and built-in wine chillers. These additions offer convenient access to beverages and perishables, allowing hosts to serve guests without disrupting the cooking process. The expansive kitchen island serves as a multifunctional centerpiece, providing additional prep space, casual seating, and a natural gathering spot during social events.
Seamless Integration of Design Elements
A key challenge in the remodel was the massive, vaulted fireplace wall that remained after expanding the kitchen. To address this, we extended the existing brickwork and introduced wall paneling and rift-cut white oak cabinetry. This approach not only grounded the space but also mirrored the angular focal point of the kitchen’s range wall, creating a harmonious flow between the cooking and living areas.
Natural light plays a crucial role in the kitchen’s ambiance. An 8-foot-wide window above the sink offers a picturesque view of the backyard, allowing parents to keep an eye on their children and pets while enjoying the serene outdoor scenery. This feature enhances the kitchen’s open and airy feel, reinforcing the coastal aesthetic.
Thoughtful Storage Solutions
Understanding the importance of organization in a high-functioning kitchen, we designed a walk-in pantry that combines open shelving with cabinet drawers. This configuration accommodates countertop appliances, large serving ware, and non-perishable goods, keeping the main kitchen area uncluttered. A glass door to the pantry not only sparks curiosity but also highlights the continuity of the kitchen’s finishes, adding an element of transparency and depth to the design.
