Award-winning project for both ASID San Diego and NKBA SoCal, coastal modern meets farmhouse-esque elements in this remodeled home. A family of four and their 2 fur-children were in need of an elevated, laid-back environment to suit their family lifestyle of lounging and entertaining.
Square-footage was added to accommodate a larger family room and kitchen to include a walk-in pantry and an island fit for hosting. Its expansion left a massive, vaulted fireplace wall. As the existing brickwork was extended, wall-paneling and rift-white oak cabinetry served as the creative solution to ground the space and mimic the angular focal-point of the mirroring kitchen range wall. A window spanning 8’ wide in the kitchen overlooks the backyard offering peace-of-mind for the parents and ample natural light. Pursuing a more relaxed vibe of a living space, cabinetry panels disguise the fronts of Thermador refrigerator and freezer columns along with the dishwasher and additional undercounter units. Methodically configured to house countertop appliances, large serving ware and non-perishable goods, the walk-in pantry features a combination of open shelving and cabinet drawers. A glass door is intended to spark curiosity and highlight the continuity of the kitchen finishes.
While the smaller primary suite remained, a desired freestanding tub was implemented by transforming the existing bathroom into a wetroom. A delightful discovery of vaulted ceiling joists continuing from the adjacent space paved the way for a loftier look within the bathroom. An added kids lounge offers video-game playing with bean bag chairs and dedicated homework stations.
A palette of warm woods paired with variations of blues and easy-maintenance textural surfaces caters to the beachy casual vibe.
Megan is everything you could ask for in a designer. She’s creative, energetic, patient and fun. She listened to what we wanted—a beachy, modern farmhouse—and brought it to life beyond anything we could have imagined. We love how there's a focal point in every space, like the cozy living and family rooms with custom millwork fireplaces and conversation furniture pieces, such as the wooden chair carved like a hand. Our kitchen is striking, with deep blue cabinets, unique wall tile and backsplash, and dramatic lighting. Our bathroom feels like a spa with a standing soaking tub. We wouldn’t change a thing. It’s our forever home.
