Since 2009, I’ve been working in the interior design industry. I’ve interned for a hospitality design company, worked in various furniture and fabric showrooms, and been an interior designer for a design-build firm. I decided to hang out my shingle and launch m studio interior design in 2015. And now I get to do what I love best: Design homes that are totally customized to the clients I work with!
When we think about wellness, the air we breathe is something that can be overlooked. Yet, crazy enough, indoor air quality is one of the most crucial factors affecting our health and well-being. After obtaining my WELL AP credential, I learned from the WELL Building Standard that the air in our homes and workplaces significantly impacts our mood, energy levels, and even cognitive performance!
Imagine stepping into a space where the air feels fresh and invigorating (like you stepped into the country of Costa Rica!). It’s not just about eliminating pollutants—it’s about creating a design that invites clean, healthy air to flow freely. As an interior designer with a wellness-focused approach, I believe that optimizing air quality is truly a cornerstone of creating a home that nurtures both body and mind.
In this article, I’d love to guide you through the key elements of designing with air quality in mind- from understanding its importance to practical tips for integrating wellness-enhancing features into your home.
It’s wild to know that most of us spend 90% of our time indoors (maybe not necessarily in SoCal), but between home life and work life, a vast majority of our time is spent inside. This means the air inside our homes has a profound effect on our overall health. Unfortunately, indoor air can often be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air, filled with allergens, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and even mold spores. These invisible culprits can trigger respiratory issues, fatigue, and allergies, turning your supposed sanctuary into a source of stress.
But here’s the good news: with thoughtful design choices, you can take control of your indoor air quality!! This starts with understanding where pollutants come from—think furniture finishes, cleaning products, and even the materials used during renovations. Once we know the sources, we can make better choices that create a healthier environment.
Design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about functionality and intention. By addressing air quality as part of your home’s design, you’re not only protecting your health but also setting the tone for a space that promotes calm, focus, and rejuvenation.
One of the easiest ways to improve air quality in your home is to embrace natural ventilation. Windows aren’t just for letting in sunlight—they’re your connection to fresh air. Make it a habit to open windows daily, even if just for 15 minutes, to let stale air escape and oxygen-rich air circulate.
Integrating plants into your design is another simple yet powerful strategy. Certain plants, like peace lilies, snake plants, and Boston ferns, are natural air purifiers. They not only enhance the aesthetic of your space but also actively filter toxins from the air. Pair them with stylish planters that complement your design for a win-win solution.
If you’re renovating, prioritize materials with low or zero VOCs. From paints to flooring and furniture, many brands now offer eco-friendly options that won’t compromise air quality. And don’t forget to invest in a high-quality air purifier for areas where ventilation may be limited, such as bedrooms or home offices.
Your home’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system plays a HUGE role in maintaining air quality. But like any tool, it needs regular maintenance to perform its best. Change your air filters every three months (or more frequently if you have pets or allergies). Consider upgrading to HEPA filters for maximum particle capture.
Another innovative option is installing a whole-home air purification system, which works seamlessly with your HVAC to filter out contaminants. It’s a bigger investment, but the long-term benefits to your health and home value make it worthwhile.
Smart technology is also revolutionizing HVAC systems, allowing you to monitor and control air quality through apps. Look for systems with integrated air quality sensors that can adjust airflow or alert you when pollutants reach concerning levels.
If you’re like me and just aren’t yet ready for that HVAC air filtration and purification system, introducing portable air purifiers is a perfect solution to minimize pollutants and purify the air in your home. These babies are especially great if you’re living through a remodel!
Incorporating natural airflow into your home’s layout is one of my favorite ways to create a space that feels alive and balanced. Think of your home as a living organism—it needs to “breathe.” Open-concept layouts, high ceilings, and strategically placed windows encourage natural air circulation, reducing the need for artificial cooling or heating.
Ceiling fans are another underrated design element for improving airflow. Today’s ceiling fan designs are as chic as they are functional, offering options that blend seamlessly into your décor while keeping air moving.
If you’re in the process of designing or renovating, consider the orientation of your home. Positioning windows to align with prevailing wind patterns can create a natural cross-ventilation effect, bringing in fresh air and pushing out stale air effortlessly.
Ultimately, designing with air quality in mind is about aligning your environment with your wellness goals. Clean, fresh air supports better sleep, sharper focus, and a calmer mind—everything we need for a healthy, vibrant life.
As we embrace the concept of “Fresh Starts” this January, take a moment to assess your home’s air quality. Are there areas where you can make improvements? Maybe it’s swapping out a harsh chemical cleaner for a natural alternative, or finally tackling that clutter that’s blocking airflow. Each small change you make contributes to a home that feels more like a sanctuary.
By weaving air quality into the fabric of your home design, you’re creating a foundation for wellness that supports you every day. Let 2025 be the year you breathe easier—literally and figuratively.
Xoxo,
Megan
