Since 2009, I’ve been working in the interior design industry. I’ve interned for a hospitality design company, worked in various furniture and fabric showrooms, and been an interior designer for a design-build firm. I decided to hang out my shingle and launch m studio interior design in 2015. And now I get to do what I love best: Design homes that are totally customized to the clients I work with!
This time last year, I had the privilege of visiting Paris, France for their bi-annual Maison et Objet and Deco Off for an incredible show releasing all of the latest in the interior design industry from textiles to lighting. And let me tell you, it was a real treat! In fact, you can walk down memory lane with me and check out some of my top fave finds from the shows in Paris here.
While I was not able to sneak out to Paris this year, I was thrilled to have made my way domestically on a much shorter flight to the Winter Las Vegas Market. A quick 45 minute plane ride away, I was immersed in all sorts of amazingly delightful finds. It was fascinating to see how some of the styles and trends that I witnessed last year in Europe have slowly made its way to the US!
My feet may be sore and my body exhausted from bouncing from showroom to showroom and sofa hopping, but I must admit that venturing out to this show was much like taking a kid to Disneyland!! There were a few emerging trends that stood out to me on this particular trip with a huge emphasis on human connection and wellness & well-being.
Wellness, it’s a word that’s creating a lot of buzz in every industry. While it can mean so many different things to different people, I took a moment to look up its definition in the Webster Dictionary, simple yet powerful-
While of course regular exercise and a good diet are major contributors towards a life of wellness, we must not forget about our surroundings and how our interior environments affect our health.
In the vast and exciting realm of interior design, my 3 days at market unveiled a plethora of trends that seamlessly blended aesthetics with wellness. As I perused showroom after showroom of stunning pieces from furniture to lighting, it was evident that these emerging trends are the ones that will have a lasting impact, creating homes that will echo tranquility and self-care. Get ready as we delve into the ‘here-to-stay’ trends that promise to transform living spaces into sanctuaries of comfort in the home.
In the pursuit of creating homes that nurture both the eye and the soul, the trend of Holistic Hues emerges as a resounding favorite. Literally every vendor from furnishings to casegoods to textiles, had some form of these soft, muted tones that offer a quietude that transcends visual appeal.
These tranquil hues—whispering greens, muted blues, and warm, earthy neutrals—harbor a profound connection with wellness. While gray is an outward trend, the use of warm grays, or greiges, with taupes is a tone that embodies that tranquil essence. By enveloping living spaces in these calming shades, a holistic haven may be created, an ambiance that fosters peace and relaxation. The result is a home that acts as a serene refuge from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
Immersing interiors in the raw beauty of reclaimed and textured woods is a prevailing trend that echoes a desire to reconnect with nature. From weathered organically formed wood to rhythmic and raw statement pieces, the use of these wood finishess instills a sense of warmth and grounding and authenticity.
This design choice not only brings the outdoors in (and likewise indoors out) but also symbolizes a commitment to sustainable living. As the tactile warmth of natural wood envelops a room, occupants are transported to a space that resonates with the healing essence of nature. This trend, therefore, seamlessly intertwines aesthetic appeal with the inherent wellness that nature provides.
In a world that often feels fast-paced and unpredictable, the trend of Heavy Textures emerges as a comforting embrace, like receiving a welcoming hug from a cloud. From chunky boucles to luxurious shag-like textures, the emphasis is on creating a tactile haven that invokes a sense of security.
These textures invite touch and tactile exploration, adding a layer of sensory comfort to living spaces. The result is a cocooning effect that not only elevates the visual richness of a room but also contributes to the overall well-being of its users. As chunky textures become synonymous with coziness, homes transform into retreats where relaxation is paramount.
The rising trend of natural-looking furniture and decor reflects a broader shift towards wellness and self-care in home design. Interior environments are increasingly seen as sanctuaries for mental and physical well-being, and this is mirrored in the choice of natural materials and earthy tones, or even pieces that replicate the movement to convey a sense of mother nature’s creation. Materials like wood, stone, shell and sustainable fibers not only provide a visually calming aesthetic but also contribute to a sense of connection with nature, promoting a serene atmosphere within living spaces.
The emphasis on natural elements extends beyond aesthetics, as these materials often embody durability and longevity, aligning with a more mindful and sustainable approach to consumption. Incorporating elements inspired by the outdoors into interior spaces creates a harmonious blend between the artificial and natural worlds, fostering a sense of balance and tranquility. As individuals seek refuge from the stresses of modern life, the integration of nature-inspired design elements into homes becomes a powerful tool for enhancing mental and emotional well-being.
Simply put, this holistic approach to design emphasizes the idea that our living spaces play such a significant and crucial role in supporting our overall health and happiness. The trends spotted at the Las Vegas Market captured this shift towards designs that prioritized well-being and self-care.
By embracing Holistic Hues, Raw & Reclaimed Woods, Heavy Textures and Earthy & Organic Forms, there is the opportunity to curate living spaces that are not only visually appealing but also nurturing to the mind, body, and soul! In this world that often demands constant engagement, these lasting design trends offer a respite—a sanctuary where wellness and interior design converge in perfect harmony.
