Since 2009, I’ve been working in the interior design industry. I’ve interned for a hospitality design company, worked in various furniture and fabric showrooms, and been an interior designer for a design-build firm. I decided to hang out my shingle and launch m studio interior design in 2015. And now I get to do what I love best: Design homes that are totally customized to the clients I work with!
I had the absolute pleasure of visiting the city of lights at the start of January. What a great way to start off in 2023, right!? It was an absolutely AMAZING experience to submerge myself in complete design inspiration and witness the design trends coming out of Europe. And to think, this was all to polish my knowledge for my professional career!
The annual Deco Off in Paris, which ran from January 18th to 22nd, combines all of the city’s greatest design showrooms from fabrics and trimmings to wall coverings. Trade professionals from interior designers and home decorators flood the streets of the left and right banks to explore the newest and coolest collections. A fun side note, this show is open to the general public as well! There were literally hundreds of showrooms that we flocked to. My step count ranged from 18,000 to 25,000 a day and my designer gal pal Marbé and I roughed the 30 degree weather! Totally worth it.
Unlike the showroom hopping of Deco Off, Maison et Objet is a convention hosted twice a year and is visited by many people throughout the world. Imagine halls and halls filled with upholstery, home décor, decorative lighting for not just residential, but hospitality and beyond! This particular year launched the start of their “Maison & Objet in the City”, that features the 100 spots that make up the Parisian ecosystem of excellence in decor: decorators, interior designers, galleries, great maisons and exceptional craftspeople.
You cannot fathom just how many fabric samples we flipped through, how many chairs and sofas were sat on and how many selfies were taken with shiny objects.
While there were SO MANY gorgeously amazing items that were spotted, I have compiled my top ten that made my standouts list from this trip.
I fell in love with these sculptural and unique furniture pieces carefully crafted in Thailand. I found them to be so imaginative and playful. The quality and robustness of the metals used were no doubt a tribute to their craftsmanship. I hope to introduce a statement piece or two in upcoming design projects!
Luxury gym equipment, yes please! From dumb bells to yoga mats, this brand has elevated the look of any workout with their exquisite collection of leathers and variety of luxurious metals to choose from. As one who celebrates fitness and well-being, I’m most excited about how they’ve created their equipment to sit beautifully in any living space!
I spotted their booth from a distance and caught myself drooling over the most elaborate and unique accessory pieces. Glass blown vases with coastal motifs and multimedia décor collaboratively composed between European artists. Being a June baby and a Cancer, the crab motif sculpted into the blush colored vase was an item that caught my attention with delight!
A much more elegant way to heat the outdoor spaces, this brand offers substantial outdoor heat lamps that also serve as lighting. The oversized floor lanterns are great for above cocktail tables or seating arrangements. The overhead linear lights have a built-in heater and water mist sprayers for warmer days. The heat output for both products were surprisingly strong and something I see working well in Southern California!
Aside from Rory’s charming English accent, what made this booth a standout was the hand-sketched designs on plate ware of various meaningful objects including eye details from an optometrist’s patients and of course beloved animals of pet owners. No doubt that these would make fantastic gifts for loved ones! I regret not taking any selfies with the “Tremendous Trays” of hand-sketched cat faces!
This brand is one of many with beautiful fabrics and wallcoverings, but the most eye-catching of their offerings include their mural wallpaper collection. No photos could do their wallpaper collection any justice, hence why I did not take any apparently LOL!!! There are several different murals, all absolutely divine, that can be modified to properly fit any space… simply exquisite! You can catch a glimpse of the Sarasvati design at the upcoming Pasadena Showcase House in the entryway design by my friend and talented designer Marbé Briceno!
As I mentioned, we saw hundreds of fabrics and wallcoverings… but Thesign really knocked it out of the park with their amazing collection of outdoor fabrics, thus making my top standouts list! In the past, outdoor fabrics were limited to hues of lovely solid colors, fun textures and maybe a few so-so patterns, but never before had I seen such lively, bold and expressive prints for outdoor upholstery!! I’m giddy and cannot wait for the next outdoor project!
Oh la la, talk about fabric frenzy… the patterns, the compositions, the way the fabrics cascade. My eyes were continually opened with sheer excitement after each new fabric sample was pulled for our viewing pleasure! The ideas for custom upholstery and drapery have been spinning since seeing these stunning fabrics! They have curated collections that play on worldly patterns, luxurious finishes and stunningly tactile movement that are sure to enhance any piece of upholstery, making for exquisite statement pieces!!!
You already know my phone is filled with so many more photos of jaw dropping fabrics, wallcoverings and the like! So keep an eye out in our future blog posts and even on Instagram as I trickle out more of the Parisian goodies!
Til next París!!
Xoxo,
Megan
